Level II and Level III refer to enhanced transaction data that may be submitted with eligible commercial-card transactions. When the transaction and network requirements align, richer data can support more favorable interchange qualification.
What enhanced data adds
Depending on the transaction, enhanced fields can include tax amount, customer code, invoice information, item descriptions, quantities, unit costs and other purchase details.
Who may benefit
B2B merchants accepting a meaningful share of commercial, purchasing, corporate or government cards are the most obvious candidates for review. Consumer-heavy businesses may see little or no benefit.
Data quality matters
Simply enabling a Level III feature does not guarantee qualification. Required fields must be populated correctly and the transaction must otherwise meet applicable network criteria.
The workflow has to work
The best implementation captures needed data from the ERP, invoice or checkout workflow instead of forcing staff to manually enter excessive information at every transaction.
Measure before and after
Use detailed statements to identify eligible volume, establish a baseline, implement changes and verify whether qualification and effective cost actually improved.
Level II/III is an optimization strategy for eligible transactions—not a universal discount and not a guaranteed savings percentage.
